Role Overview – Trustee

Beccles Lido Limited (BLL) is a charitable body that manages Beccles Lido, Beccles Public Hall & Theatre and Big Dog Ferry on behalf of our local community in Beccles. As a charitable leisure organisation in the heart of Beccles, we exist to support community engagement through affordable entertainment, sport, leisure and community activities.

The Board of BLL is always open to applications from potential new Trustees (Trustees are also Directors of BLL, a company limited by guarantee) to help us continue to grow the Charity in this period of economic and social challenge, where access to the arts, sport, leisure and community activities is proving to be increasingly important.

The Board welcomes dynamic and inclusive people who have an interest in the work of the Charity, as well as our local community in Beccles and the Waveney Valley, and who can bring a range of skills and experience to the Board in areas such as Business, Finance, Law, the Arts, Leisure and Sport, IT, PR and Marketing or Fundraising.

Role Overview – Trustee

The Board of Trustees takes overall responsibility for the Charity and its activities. Trustees are appointed to formulate strategy, monitor performance against the charitable aims, ensure the financial sustainability of the charity, monitor risk and promote the work of BLL to all sections of the community.

Trustee Role Description

Trustees have a responsibility to act in the best interest of the Charity and to:
• Contribute actively to the Board of Trustees, providing strategic direction to BLL setting overall policy, and defining targets.
• Ensure that the charity complies with charity law, and with the requirements of the Charity Commission.
• Ensure that the charity remains true to the charitable purpose and objects set out in its Memorandum and Articles of Association.
• Comply with the requirements of relevant legislation and regulations.
• Act with integrity and avoid any personal conflicts of interest or misuse of Charity funds or assets.

To exemplify the values of the organisation by:
• Attending meetings regularly and being actively involved in decision-making.
• Acting as an advocate for the Charity by forging and maintaining links outside the organisation.
• Engaging willingly and actively with the activities and those who work (or volunteer) to deliver them.

Trustees have ultimate responsibility for the organisation, including finance, organisational strategy and performance. Trustees are required to understand and embrace the seven principles of public life as defined by the Nolan Committee. These are selflessness, integrity, objectivity, accountability, openness, honesty and leadership.

Person Specification

• Demonstrable commitment to the objectives of BLL.
• Expertise and experience relevant to the Charity’s strategic aims.
• Strong communication skills and an ability to work effectively as a member of a team.
• Understanding and acceptance of the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of trusteeship.
• Ability to contribute to future policy and strategy developments with a creative approach and independence of thought.

Time Commitment

• Currently full Board meetings are held bi-monthly.
• Other sub-committee or project meetings as necessary from time to time.
• Attending and helping to host stakeholder events in support of the Charity’s activities.
• 4 hours per month to support in your specific area of expertise.
• Some additional time to study papers and give ad hoc support to the management team as necessary.

Remuneration

• Trustees do not receive remuneration.
